Unlocking lithium from geothermal brine: A game-changing project

Rory James and his team are currently engaged in a groundbreaking geothermal project—extracting lithium from brine. This emerging technology presents new engineering challenges, requiring specialized equipment that can withstand harsh operating conditions while optimizing the efficiency of lithium recovery.

“This project is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in geothermal energy and resource extraction,” Rory explains. “We needed a manufacturing partner with deep expertise in precision engineering, advanced materials, and high-pressure systems. FIB Technologies was the clear choice.”

“The Vortex Clusters designed for this initiative play a pivotal role in separating and processing materials within the brine. “They operate under extreme conditions, so flawless engineering and material selection are critical,” Rory says. “FIB’s specialized knowledge made the difference in overcoming those challenges.”

A partnership built on expertise and innovation

“When we started looking for a manufacturing partner, FIB Technologies stood out immediately,” Rory explains. They understood the technical demands from day one and collaborated closely to develop effective, tailored solutions.”

The Vortex Clusters are intricate systems, demanding high precision and robust construction. Every aspect—from design to fabrication—must perform reliably under pressure and heat. “The combination of complex fabrication capabilities and material knowledge ensured we could meet all project requirements,” he adds.

Solving engineering challenges together

One of the biggest challenges in the project was optimizing the internal flow dynamics of the Vortex Clusters while maintaining structural integrity. “The initial designs required modifications to enhance efficiency and durability,” Rory notes. “Together, we refined the design and applied new manufacturing techniques that significantly boosted both performance and longevity.”

A key part of the process involved advanced welding techniques to join high-grade alloys without compromising strength. “FIB’s expertise was critical—they not only handled the complex welds with precision but also collaborated with us to identify process improvements that reduced lead times without compromising quality,” Rory explains.

Expanding applications: Beyond lithium extraction

Beyond the geothermal lithium project, Rory highlights additional applications for the Vortex Clusters.

“We’re using the technology in a variety of industries,” he says. “For example, in refining and gas processing, the vortex cluster is well proven to optimize separation, mitigate foaming and bring existing equipment back into specification.

“The adaptability of the design—combined with flexible engineering—has opened doors across multiple industries,” Rory adds. “We’ve also explored applications in hydrogen production, wastewater treatment, and high-performance energy systems.”

Delivering on tight deadlines

Like many industrial projects, time constraints were a major factor. “We had a strict timeline to meet, and FIB Technologies delivered,” Rory says. “Their ability to manage production efficiently while maintaining high quality was impressive. They coordinated closely with our team, ensuring seamless integration of their work with the broader system development.”

The impact of the collaboration

Rory has been working with FIB Technologies for several years now, and the Vortex Clusters are one of the standout outcomes of this ongoing partnership. These units are already operating successfully in the field across multiple sites.

“The real-world performance has been impressive,” Rory states. “Together, we’ve improved system efficiency, reduced maintenance, and boosted reliability.”
