At FIB Technologies, our expertise in titanium welding is built on years of experience and continuous innovation. We have refined our processes through extensive research and hands-on application to meet the highest industry standards. In a recent conversation with Aaldert de Vries, our Welding Engineer, we explored the advanced techniques and meticulous controls that ensure our titanium welds achieve unmatched quality and reliability.

Crafting the ideal environment for titanium welding

“Maintaining a controlled environment is essential for all welding processes,” Aaldert begins, “but with titanium, it’s critical due to its heightened sensitivity to contamination. Titanium has an extreme affinity for oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen at temperatures above 450°C. These gases can cause embrittlement, loss of ductility, and weld cracking. Thus, stringent gas shielding and absolute cleanliness are mandatory to maintain weld integrity.”

We have strategically upgraded and optimized a dedicated section of our facility for titanium welding to meet the highest industry standards. This specialized area is maintained with rigorous cleanliness protocols, including daily cleaning routines to eliminate dust and contaminants, ensuring an environment that upholds the integrity of every weld. Access points are controlled to prevent drafts and minimize air intrusion, ensuring a stable atmosphere crucial for titanium welding. This dedication to environmental control safeguards the integrity of our welds and upholds the highest quality standards.

To further enhance our welding environment, we’ve established cleanrooms. These are designed with positive pressure systems, which prevent external contaminants from entering the workspace. A controlled level of overpressure is maintained to minimize the risk of contamination, preserving the optimal conditions essential for high-quality titanium welding.

Pioneering specialized equipment

Our quest for perfection led us to develop customized tools tailored for titanium welding. We’ve engineered a unique welding torch featuring an internal gas line, allowing for direct connection to trailing shields without inconvenient external hoses. This innovation enhances gas coverage and streamlines the welding process.

We’ve significantly improved equipment and environmental controls in our pursuit of excellence in titanium welding. “We’ve collaborated with manufacturers to introduce larger gas cups, such as the Furick cups made from hardened glass,’ notes Aaldert. ‘These cups provide an expanded gas shield, ensuring superior protection during complex welds and reducing the risk of air ingress. Additionally, their transparent design enhances visibility for our welders, allowing them to closely monitor the weld pool —an essential factor in achieving flawless titanium welds.”

Mastering gas purity and monitoring

Aaldert emphasizes the critical importance of gas purity in titanium welding: “In the delicate art of titanium welding, gas purity is paramount. We utilize high-purity argon (minimum 99.998% purity) to create an inert atmosphere, preventing oxidation and discoloration. Our gas delivery systems are carefully designed with diffusion-tight lines and fittings, minimizing any risk of contamination. In addition, we utilize trailing shields attached to our welding torches to provide additional inert gas coverage, ensuring the weld and heat-affected zones are protected from atmospheric contamination during cooling.”

To further ensure the absence of oxygen within our welding zones, we employ oxygen meters measuring in ppm O₂. This monitoring allows our welders to operate with confidence, knowing the environment is precisely controlled.

Aaldert continues: “To maintain weld integrity, post-weld gas shielding must be sustained until the weld cools below 250-300°C. Special shielding cups, extended trailing shields, and purge chambers should be utilized to ensure full coverage during cooling.”

Empowering skilled artisans

At the heart of our titanium welding capabilities are our highly trained welders. We invest extensively in their education, emphasizing the critical aspects of material preparation, cleanliness, and technique.

From the careful cleaning of welding wire with acetone to the disciplined practice of clipping the wire tip after each weld, our welders embody a culture of precision. Their expertise and commitment to quality are fundamental to our operations, ensuring that every weld meets the highest industry standards.

Aaldert explains: “Welding surfaces should be cleaned with acetone or alcohol using lint-free cloths. The use of chlorinated solvents is strictly prohibited, as these can lead to stress corrosion cracking. Prior to welding, a stainless-steel brush dedicated exclusively to titanium is used to remove any oxide layer, followed by immediate welding to prevent recontamination.”

Titanium welding – upholding stringent quality control

We adhere to strict inspection protocols, using color reference charts to evaluate weld quality and ensure discoloration does not exceed a light yellow hue.

“Acceptable welds typically exhibit a silver or yellow straw color, indicating minimal oxidation. Colors such as blue, purple, or gray suggest higher levels of oxidation and potential contamination, necessitating rework.” Aaldert says.

Visual inspections are performed under ISO 5817, acceptance level B, and are complemented by radiographic examinations to ensure internal weld quality meets the required standards. This comprehensive approach guarantees that our titanium welds are not only robust but also flawless in the field.
