Pickling and Passivation at FIB Technologies: Expertise, experience, and sustainability

Stainless steel is known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, but that protection is not always guaranteed—especially after welding, machining, or heat treatments. Pickling and passivation are critical treatments that restore and enhance stainless steel’s protective properties.

At FIB Technologies, we have made these pickling and passivation processes a core part of our Manufacturing expertise. With decades of experience, a state-of-the-art facility, and a strong focus on sustainability, we offer high-quality pickling and passivation services for both our own products and external partners.

The science behind pickling and passivation

When stainless steel undergoes fabrication processes, oxidation layers and contaminants form on the surface, reducing its natural corrosion resistance. Pickling removes these layers using a controlled chemical process, ensuring a clean, uniform surface.

Following this, passivation reinforces the material by stimulating the formation of a chromium oxide passive layer. This ultra-thin layer prevents further oxidation and provides enhanced protection, extending the lifespan of the product. The result is a cleaner, more durable, and highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel component.

State-of-the-art facilities at FIB Technologies

To ensure the best results, FIB Technologies operates a 600 m² leak-proof pickling facility, designed to handle a wide variety of stainless steel components. Our facility, upgraded in 2018, is equipped with multiple treatment methods, ensuring the right approach for every application:

  • Immersion pickling – For uniform treatment, smaller parts (up to 6.85 meters long, 1.85 meters wide, and 2.0 meters deep) are fully submerged in a controlled acid bath, ensuring complete removal of impurities.
  • Spray pickling – A high-pressure application method is used to effectively clean and treat extensive surfaces for larger structures or components that exceed immersion dimensions.
  • Pickling paste – Applied for localized treatment, such as weld seams or hard-to-reach areas, ensuring precise application without unnecessary chemical exposure.

This range of options allows us to treat everything from large industrial structures to precision-engineered components with the highest level of accuracy.

Uncompromising quality and precision

Quality is at the heart of everything we do. Every product that goes through our pickling and passivation process is subject to a strict visual inspection by our Quality Control (QC) department to ensure the complete removal of contaminants and chemical residues. This guarantees that each component meets the highest durability and performance standards.

Beyond quality control, technical expertise plays a critical role. Products must be free of oil, grease, or adhesives before pickling to ensure optimal results. Structural considerations, such as adequate drainage openings for tubular or box-section components, also influence the effectiveness of the treatment. Additionally, welded products with chain welds, porous welds, or tack welds may not be suitable for pickling, as chemicals can get trapped in small slits, potentially leading to long-term material degradation.

Sustainability at the core

FIB Technologies takes environmental responsibility seriously. Our leak-proof flooring and advanced drainage systems prevent harmful substances from entering the environment, ensuring that all used chemicals are properly collected and purified before disposal.

We have also implemented high-efficiency ventilation systems, minimizing the release of fumes and maintaining a safe and controlled working environment. In addition, our responsible waste management policies ensure that all by-products of the pickling process are handled in full compliance with strict environmental regulations.
