FIB INDUSTRIES COLLABORATION WITH AVANTIUM

In a significant stride towards sustainable and renewable chemistry, FIB Technologies is proud to announce its pivotal role in the collaboration with Avantium, a leader in the field of renewable chemistry based in Amsterdam. This partnership has led to the creation of the world's first commercial-scale facility for producing FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), a key ingredient in the revolutionary plant-based and recyclable plastic, PEF (polyethylene furanoate).
FIB Technologies and Avantium pioneer 1st FDCA plant

Avantium, employing around 200 people and operating extensive R&D laboratories along with three pilot plants in Geleen and Delfzijl, the Netherlands, stands at the forefront of the emerging renewable and sustainable chemistry industry. With its YXY® Technology, Avantium has made significant breakthroughs in developing and commercializing chemicals from renewable sources and circular plastic materials. These innovations are crucial for producing consumer products that meet the growing demand for sustainability.

PEF, Avantium’s flagship product, represents a new generation of plastic with exceptional environmental and performance features, including superior barrier properties and reduced carbon footprint. The material’s vast potential spans packaging, textiles, and films – markets collectively valued at over $200 billion.

The FDCA production line, plant Delfzijl

The FDCA plant in Delfzijl marks a monumental achievement in industrial chemistry. Dubbed ’the sleeping giant,’ FDCA has been pursued for over a century due to its potential to revolutionize the production of polymers such as polyesters, polyamides, and polyurethanes, along with coating resins, plasticizers, and other chemical products. Avantium’s YXY® Technology has now made it possible to harness the full potential of FDCA, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

FIB Technologies contributed to this pioneering project by manufacturing nine stainless steel pressure vessels, essential components of the FDCA production line. This collaboration underscores FIB’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in engineering and manufacturing.

The project reached a milestone when FIB’s Sales Manager, Harold A. van der Veen, and Commercial Director Albert Botter, were warmly welcomed at Avantium’s Delfzijl plant by H.J. de Kleijn and Peter Mangnus. The visit highlighted the strong partnership and shared dedication to pioneering solutions.

Mr. de Kleijn, Project Manager at Avantium, expressed his gratitude for the collaboration: “I really appreciated your visit and – more importantly – the craftsmanship that FIB Technologies demonstrated in providing us with high-quality equipment. It’s greatly appreciated!”

This venture, supported by invaluable contributions from partners like Worley, exemplifies FIB’s and Avantium’s joint mission to lead the charge towards a sustainable future.
